EXHIBITIONS / THIS TIME IT'S OFFICIAL, THIS TIME IT'S SERIOUS, THIS TIME IT'S PERSONAL, THIS TIME IT'S DIFFERENT

08.04.2010 to 01.05.2010

My current body of work is very much about operating in a moment of confusion. A contemporary state where visual culture seems as temporal as a digital bitmap. I see painting as having the capacity to promote something physical that might be able to reassert the importance of a lasting visceral experience.
I use computers as a drawing tool- not as a form of technological masturbation, but as a way of bringing back the contemporary image/interface of the computer into something more humanly tangible. The works start as an image drawn intimately on a computer tablet and end as tightly-painted renditions executed on exposed raw linens and canvas supports. The drawing and erasing of digitally derived painting scrawls is used to both cover and reveal the raw canvas and linen surfaces.
These are not copies of a digital image, but rather paintings with their own kind of failings. I'm interested in the slippage of getting things wrong even under the most tightly constrained conditions. I want to juxtapose a standardized digital process with a humanity and light-heartedness that is generated through the use of simple materials, personal inflections, and a colour sensibility that avoids overly formal endeavours. My paintings are happily self-defeating- these are not heroic leanings to a greater formal goal but are instant, playful, and self-effacing- and they intend to speak with a unique voice that defiantly promotes a personal painting idiom.
