EXHIBITIONS / THE PM PROJECT
12.05.2005 to 28.05.2005
Loosely based on the compositions of Piet Mondrian, the PM Project presents three works which share the same compositional elements but are executed in different materials.
By presenting the same composition in oil, perspex and as a light instalation the artist seeks to draw our attention to the importance material can make in the presentation of an art work.
The different materials used create three very distinct works which explore the architectural presence of the art object in the gallery environment. The sculptural nature of the work brings a simple line composition into the gallery space in
a very physical way.
Each piece explores a different architectural element which affects our perception of space. The reference to Piet Mondrian is a deliberate move by the artist to look at how the work of a really well known twentieth century artist can be used and re-interpreted in a new way. By taking a single painting, in this case ‘Composition en Blanc et Noir II' (Composition in White and Black II) 1930 and using it as a starting point to create new work, the artist seeks to create a link between the legacy of twentieth century abstract painting and contemporary approaches.
Francesca Mataraga is a Sydney based artist whose work is primarily sculptural.
