EXHIBITIONS / THE GRAPHIC USER INTERFACE (GUI)
21.07.2005 to 06.08.2005
This show has moved beyond the spatial confines of the 2-dimensional format of left-right, up-down. Now we read from any centre to on-top, underneath and around any edge. I write this in GUI, I look and find and talk in GUI, we all think in GUI. We shop and fuck in GUI. Painting works in GUI, why not? Everything can. I have painted pictures in GUI, and all pictures are like thoughts, but not all thoughts are equal. Some simple and some not; some are pleasant, others aren’t. All the thoughts we think in our lives we end up thinking for a reason, and it seems more efficient in GUI.
This is a painting show, so there are no real truths. It can’t really all be about GUI. If these were really GUI windows we would wonder whose choosing it is that allocates which information appears where and when: even if a window invites itself into our space, we must have set it off in some small way. Despite this, these objects fight to retain some sense of dignity and autonomy amongst the subjective gaze. This is clear enough as we experience their efforts to journey away from the surface of the wall into our own space, in so doing they demand assessment and compartmentalization.
