EXHIBITIONS / ROHAN WILSON

29.07.2010 to 21.08.2010

The work for this show is a little different from past shows. It is more object based than image based. I continue to be disenchanted with the idea of making a picture of something; why make pictures OF things, when you can make things.

I don't understand why we paint realistic landscape when we are too lazy to just visit a place? Why compete with the beauty of nature when you can't really?

These objects look at the relationship between the organic and the man-made. It is perhaps, focussing on australian indigenous practice which demonstrates an attachment to their physical environment, a facility not naturally available to white Australians -- we tend to want to depict the landscape.

Of course, we are influenced by this. Obviously, indigenous "art" is influenced by Western practice.

So hopefully this work demonstrates a tolerable level of appropriation and providence of ideas.

These works generally arrive in the form of a diptych. They arrive in the studio with my help, and develop organically. I am glad to be a part of the process, the thinking part is often the vehicle for direction.

I hope you enjoy this work, it's a little bit of fun. I thank Peloton for the opportunity to express myself.
