EXHIBITIONS / JOHN NIXON

16.07.2009 to 08.08.2009

John Nixon will exhibit recent silver monochromes paintings from the ongoing group of works titled EPW: SILVER begun in Sydney in 1995.
The last exhibition of silver paintings in Sydney was held at Anna Schwartz Gallery at the Depot in 2005.
In these works various natural and manufactured elements are used to activate the surface of the monochrome including bark, sand, wool, string, tacks, washers, wooden blocks and bottle tops. The surfaces are then painted with Aluminium Enamel paint. In some the negative white space left when areas have been taped create further compositional elements.
The textures and shapes created by these additional elements make for a dynamic, energetic and interesting solution to monochrome painting today.
John Nixon is concurrently working on polychrome paintings. An exhibition of works from the EPW: POLYCHROME series will be held at Sarah Cottier Gallery, Sydney, opening 28 August 2009.
