Marita Fraser

Marita Fraser's work examines what it is to paint. The materiality of paint and the desire to work with such a material are the primary concerns of the artist. The site of the work is constantly shifting, from paint on floor, to paint on walls, to structural board and back onto the canvas.  Paint is poured and puddled, to create works which in some instances address iconic archetypes of late modernism such as the stripe painting, the drip painting and the target, but also dissolve into the materiality of the work's production, melting onto the floor or dripping off the wall. The work embraces the performative aspects of painting as well as addressing the site specificity of the works production and reception.

I’ll be right back presents a number of possibilities of what paint and painting might be.  The possible sites of paintings location such as the walls, floor and canvas collide. I’ll be right back refers to some kind of return, suggesting an ongoing process as well as a self-reflexive approach to painting.
