“Inner Soundings” is Lisa Jones’ first collaboration with sound designer Derek Allan. It is a response to the experience of having an MRI scan. Working with recordings of noises MRI machines produce in the course of scanning, the installation creates a sound-scape in Dogleg Tunnel on Cockatoo Island. This convict-quarried shaft links the two sides of the island and cuts through the mass of sandstone rock. In the depths of this interior, murmurings of voices mix with alienating, mechanical layers of sound; an echo of the hundreds of engines, turbines, drills, and hammers of the island's past.
