After a short absence from the Sydney art scene Julia Gorman and Geoff Newton return with a series of new sculptural objects and paintings, continuing their investigations into the language of image making and
abstraction. Geoff and Julia are making some things together, or at least thinking of things together, and thinking about and making some other things separately. The final show might not end up being any of the things we've thought about or made together. Geoff has made a lot of things which all sound really cool. Julia might not end up making anything, but most probably will, being a true professional. In a career that has explored a range of genres including landscape, abstraction, portraiture and still life, Newton combines exquisite formal technique with investigations into the very definition of painting. By exploring these genres separately, Newton creates a synthesis of each, the result of which can be somewhat unsettling yet entirely engaging.
